Burgo Viejo Crianza

Burgo Viejo Crianza - The Spanish Table

Burgo Viejo Crianza

On a recent trip to Spain, we were able to visit Burgo Viejo, located in the town of Alfaro on the far southeast corner of Rioja. Their winemaker, with the no-doubt-about-it-Basque-sounding name - Gorka Extebarria, was very enthusiastic about the new release: Red ruby colored wine with violet tones, this well-balanced offer comes with a sturdy structure and multiple layers of black fruit, vanilla and coconut flavors. Powerful, complex and silky smooth, this classic styled Rioja comes at a bargain price and nothing short of greatness. It also consistently gets impressive reviews for the price.

"I find balance, seriousness and some restraint in the 2018 Crianza. It has moderate alcohol and contained ripeness, integrated oak and a polished palate with fruit and spice flavors that make it quite recognizable as Rioja. It has some tannins that would welcome food and/or a little bit more time in bottle. It's 90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano matured in American oak barrels for one year. 240,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2020." 90 points Luis Gutierrez The Wine Advocate
