In the Alicante region along the Mediterranean coast of Spain, Primitivo Quiles is best known for a fortified wine called Fondillon, made from the local Monastrell grape in a style similar to Sherry. The same old vine Monastrell also goes into Raspay, their traditionally styled red wine. Aged in old oak barrels and then for a longer period in bottle. The result is a ruddy, brick red tint wine with a lovely perfume of cedar, earth, lavender, plum, and blueberry with a velvety texture and lingering flavors. Ripe dark fruits and sweet spices mingle with Mediterranean herbs such as sage, wild fennel, and olive, adding terrific layers leading up to the savory tannic finish. Lightly oxidized raisiny aroma and flavor give this wine a taste of old Spain. The label art reflects this "old-school" mindset. An amazing experience.
