- Details
- This is only the second vintage of the Petra from Raul Perez. It comes from a single vineyard that is grown on slate that is further southeast from the area of Valtuille, where he is originally from. Josh Raynolds of Vinous states, "Bright violet. Ripe black raspberry and cherry cola aromas are complemented by suggestions of floral oils, Asian spices and woodsmoke. Juicy, sweet and focused on the palate, offering concentrated red fruit preserve and spicecake flavors that become more lively with aeration. In a concentrated but decidedly energetic style; a spine of juicy acidity adds lift and definition. Finishes smooth, focused and extremely long, with resonating spiciness and smooth tannins adding grip." 94 pointsAnd Luis Gutierrez of The Wine Advocate is also a fan, "I was impressed by the 2013 Ultreia Petra, the second vintage of this wine (not produced in 2012) from some 900 plants in an old vineyard, where the slate is on the surface. The wine matured for some 17 months in barrique, a little longer than others, which might be the reason why it is slightly more volatile than others. This is a wine with a different character from all produced in the winery. The earthy minerality of the slate, a little edgy, powerful and somehow rustic. There's only one barrel of this wine in 2013." 94 points
