The Tondonia Blanco Gran Reserva wines from Lopez de Heredia are truly unique and amazing wines. What I find fascinating is that these continue to be bottled, corked, and then sealed with wax, all by hand. I've been fortunate enough to be there while they were doing it, so it's not just a story.
Dried pear, exotic white flower, blanched almond, smoky earth, and lingering notes of spice. What's amazing is the brightness and acidity on this wine. It still seems young. Impressive length and an amazing treat. Do not drink this too cold or you lose all the complexity. Ideal is 50 to 60 degrees Farenheit.
"Blessed with an extraordinarily deep, intense yellow color as well as an exotic combination of candied orange peel, roasted nut, mineral and dried apricot flavors, it is a stunning effort. Though rich and lush on the palate it never comes across as being heavy and maintains a lovely sense of freshness that provides balance. Impossible to believe this is a 40+ year old wine. A great effort." 94 points Wine Advocate.
James Suckling does not have a review of this wine, but does mention it in his 100 point review of the 1986 Marques de Murrieta Ygay Gran Reserva Especial Blanco, "I have the same mind-tingling sensation tasting this as tasting the 1964
Viņa Tondonia Gran Reserva Blanco. Another perfect wine."
