Details
"The 2011 Jaen Quinta da Pellada Gold Label comes from old vines averaging 65 to 110 years old, aged 20 months in used (fourth year) French oak. It was bottled on October 13, 2013 and tasted in late January, 2014. As with most of Castro’s wines, including those submitted for this issue, it is easy to plug in words like “elegant” and “food wine,” and they work quite well. With ripe tannins on the finish, this focused and crisp bottling may not be the most concentrated upper level wine here, but it has a juicy finish, some hints of herbs, and drinks beautifully, combining good acidity with a savory nuance. Jaen (the same grape as Spain's Mencia) and Alfrocheiro, if you’re wondering, are grapes typical in the region, often, but not always, used as a blending grape. Some producers are managing to make pretty nice mono-varietals, too. This is certainly one, although admittedly a rather pricey one. Drink now-2021."
