- Mencia-based wines can range in style from rounder and Pinot Noir-ish to fruity and Barbera-like. 'Quite' is Ortega’s “entry-level” Mencia, coming primarily from several vineyards with sandier soils which she feels give the wine a more delicate, floral aroma - a lighter and earlier-drinking expression. Mencia can become “reductive”, meaning it can close up both in aroma and flavor, so decant this to give it a chance to open up the spicy, floral high notes and the great fresh fruit. Veronica explains: “Mencía is a round, voluptuous grape and stems serve as a backbone to add freshness and tension… At the beginning there are some green notes and a certain astringency that needs to be polished, but in the long run you obtain finer wines.” And they keep us coming back again and again.
