Filipa Pato receives accolades and kudos from vintners, critics and wine aficionados the world over, and makes small batches of groundbreaking, benchmark wines from Portugal's cool-climate coastal Bairrada region. This modestly-priced gem is as impressive as anything crafted by her, exuding structure, brightness and food-friendliness all at once.
It is 100% Baga, a quirky, unique grape variety found only in this region. Its prominent acidity and red fruit aromatic attack remind one of Pinot Noir, but its focused and brisk tannins set it on a different plateau. Layers of earthiness, savory notes and a return on the finish of crisp, demonstrative fruit leave a whole host of food-pairing possibilities. Grilled salmon and various baked or grilled chicken options would be a start.
