The name 'harissa' comes from the Arabic word 'haris', which means to crush, referring to the action of crushing the chilies. Harissa comes in a variety of forms: sauce, a thicker harissa paste, and also as a powdered spice blend.

This spicy green version is rather unusual in the world of harissa, as most are made with red peppers. It's kind of like a North African incarnation of New Mexican green chile sauce.
