Telmo Rodriguez has become one of Spain's most exciting wine maker's over the past decade. His family owned Remelluri (of which he now makes again) but he stretched his wings early by making wine in different locations. He has become a strong proponent of single vineyard wines and has really worked at identifing vineyards that are worth featuring in a bottle. His project Ladeiras do Xil (meaning the hillsides of the Sil River) bega in in 2002 and at this point the wines have hit a high point.
As Caborcas is a 2.5 hectare vineyard that faces north and west with a mix of old vines on the steep hillsides. This is vibrant and expressive and practically leaps out of the glass. Elegance and intensity are in perfect balance with this. Bright, tangy red fruits, spice, crushed rock and a long, delicious finish.
"The 2.5 hectares of north- and west-facing terraces planted with old vines produced the 2016 As Caborcas, a wine of unusual intensity, elegance and balance in 2016. The cooler year seems to have worked wonders for the reds here, and the wine is expressive and open, floral and aromatic developing nuances of moss and fern, with a textured palate where the tannins hav the granite mark of stony austerity that is then coated by the glycerin and the fruit, making a wine that is both elegant and powerful, with a very Galician feeling to it. 2619 bottles produced." 96 points Luis Gutierrez Wine Advocate.
"Insane aromas of crushed berries and granite with mica. Quartz, too. Full body. Tangy and very fresh. Spectacular energy. Drink now." 96 points James Suckling
