Normally $50+. This is delicious Mencia comes from several 80-100+ year old vineyards around the town of Valtuille de Abajo that Jose Antonio Garcia is from. On this side of Bierzo, Mencia really picks up characteristics that makes one think of wines from the northern Rhone. Wonderful, velvety dark fruit with floral notes, cracked pepper and a savory, smoky note that is delicious. It's got great length and finesse and really superb intensity of flavor without being big or heavy. A great deal and very limited.
"The wine has seen a great improvement and has a clean and floral nose,
with contained ripeness and integrated oak. The palate is juicy, with
round tannins, a soft texture and clean, persistent flavors. Very tasty.
It reflects a general change I've noticed in the winery, where all
wines have gained in elegance and precision - the fruit is more focused;
ripeness is perfect; and the elevage respects the wines and helps them
express the variety, place and vintage. 2016 was not an easy year, but
the result is phenomenal." 92 points Luis Gutierrez The Wine Advocate
