El Coto dates back to 1970 and they have consistently been making some tasty wines for the past decades. Their Gran Reserva is a classically styled wine with the extended aging one expects in Gran Reservas. This has a core of dark plum and cherry flavors, with notes of dark chocolate, tobacco, spice box and a touch of leather. It's got good lift and freshness on the finish and this will age well if you care to set some down for awhile.
"The fruit and tension to this is really fun, giving it dark fruit,
walnuts and hints of chocolate on the palate. Medium to full body. Juicy
finish. Drink now." 92 points James Suckling
"Heady aromas of raisin and tobacco come with cedary oak to form a
classic Rioja gran reserva nose. A bold but balanced palate blends fresh
acidity with deep fruit and integrated tannins. Plum, currant and white
pepper flavors finish with chocolaty oak and a kiss of elegance." 93 pts Wine Enthusiast
